Go back to your website’s administration panel (Www.yourdomainname.com/wp-admin).
Click ‘Manage’.

You will see an ‘About’ page. This is the page where you have to write a bit about what your blog is about and who you are etc etc…

Understanding Wordpress Admin Panel- Categories

Every blog post you write should belong to a category. This way you will have all your blog posts categoriezed.
All the categories are shown to the right or left (based on the wordpress theme you selected). Your blog should not have many categories. This will confuse your readers. And also you don’t have to add all your categories at this very moment. You can add a couple and then as your number of blog posts increases you will get more ideas for categories.

Under ‘Manage’, click ‘Categories’.
Every blog has a category called ‘Uncategorized’. This is the default category. If you don’t allocate a category for a blog post then it automatically belongs to this ‘Uncategorized’ category. The first step is to click ‘Edit’ and give this ‘Uncategorized’ category a more meaningful name. Basically you are defining your default category here.
To add a new category click ‘add new’ and add your new category.

Wordpress Blogging Project - Blogroll

Blogroll is the links to other blogs you like and visit. You don’t necessarily have to have this. You can either choose to add your favorite links or not to add your links.

Click ‘Blogroll’ under ‘Manage’.
If you choose not to add any links then delete the existing links.
If you choose to add links then first edit the existing links and change them to yours. After you have edited existing links, to add a new link click ‘Add Link’.

Blogging Project - Writing Posts

Now you are ready to start writing posts…
Click ‘Write’ - ‘Post’
Add your content.
If you don’t want to publish it as yet (make it live) then click ‘Save’…If you are all done then click ‘Publish’.
Once a post has been published if you want to edit that post then click ‘Manage - Posts’…Go to that post and click Edit.

Upload A Wordpress Theme - How To Install Wordpress Themes - FTP Wordpress Themes

This is a step by step tutorial about ‘how to upload a wordpress theme for your blog‘.

Lets start the current tutorial…

Wordpress Admin Area

Go to your browser and enter your new domain name followed by /wp-admin. This will take you to the administration panel of the site. In my case I go to http://www.bestandcheapwebhosting.com/wp-admin
Enter your ‘Username’ and ‘Password’. This is the username and password you entered under ‘Admin Access Data’ when installing wordpress.
Click ‘Login’.

After the login the next screen snaphsot is shown below. At this stage we don’t have a theme - basically nothing…Its all blank.

Selecting A Wordpress Theme To Install

The next step is to install a wordpress theme. There are hundreds and hundreds of free wordpress themes that you can pick from.
Click ‘Presentation’.

The Presentation screen (click above image if you want to have a look at the snapshot) comes with some default wordpress themes. I personally am not a big fan of the two default themes. I prefer to pick a theme from the free wordpress themes directory. To do this scroll further down and click ‘WordPress theme directory’.

On the screen that follows you can do one of the following:

Use the ‘Search’ box to search for a wordpress theme. This is helpful if you already know the name of the free wordpress theme you are searching for.
Use the search/filter options on the left hand side of the page to narrow your search.
Alternatively go to the bottom of the page and click ‘Browse all themes’.

For this exercise I am going to click ‘Browse all themes’.

You are now presented with many many themes…Browse through them…Click ‘Test Run’ (below every theme) to get an idea of how the theme looks.
Once you have decided on a theme click ‘Download’. I have selected ‘the-glass-people’ theme. You can select whatever you prefer. Irrespective of whatever wordpress theme you pick, you can still follow the rest of the steps in this article.

Once you click Download you presented with a dialog (to save or open dialog).
Make sure ‘Save to Disk’ is selected.
Click ‘Ok’.
And save the zip file somewhere in your computer.

Free FTP Program

The next step is to upload the wordpress theme that we just downloaded to the host of your website. In my case my hosting company is hostmonster. So I have to upload my free wordpress theme (glass-people) to the hosting server. The files have to be transferred to a hosting server through a protocol called FTP (File Transfer Protocol). And to do this we need a third party FTP program.The third party FTP program that I have been using for all my websites for the past 5 years is ‘Core FTP’. I love it. Its easy to use. I have never had any problems with it. And most of all Core FTP is free.Here is the link to download the the third party FTP program - Core FTPDownload and install the free program. If you however have a different FTP program thats fine too. Basically the aim is to transfer our theme files (and other files later on) to the hosting server.

Open your third party FTP program (in my case its Core FTP) and enter the following details.

Site Name: Enter a brief name - (I have entered ‘bestandcheapwebhosting’)
Host / IP / URL: This is the syntax - ‘domainname.your main domain in hostmonster.com’. Lets assume my main domain name is xyz. So I have entered bestandcheapwebhosting.xyz.com
User Name: This is the syntax - ‘domainname@your main domain in hostmonster.com’. In my case its bestandcheapwebhosting@xyz.com (where xyz is my main domain name).
Password: Enter the password that you entered in the ‘admin access data’ when installign wordpress for your site (on hostmonster).
Click ‘Connect’

This should connect you to the hosting server for your website. Notice how on the FTP program you can view the directory structure of your website.

FTP Wordpress Theme

Now have unzip the wordpress theme you downloaded earlier and keep it ready for upload to the hosting server.
On the left hand side of the Core FTP program you can view the directory structure of your computer. Navigate to the directory where you have the unzipped files for your wordpress theme.
On the right hand side of the Core FTP program you can view the directory structure of the server. Navigate to ‘/wp-content/themes/’.
Point to the unzipped version of theme on your computer and click the arrows to move these files to /wp-content/themes/ on the server.

The image below will show you how the server directory structure will change once you upload the wordpress theme files.

Now go back to your website’s administration panel. In my case its http://bestandcheapwebhosting.com/wp-admin…
Click ‘Presentation’.
You should be able to see the newly upload wordpress theme here…
Click on that and now that becomes your website’s theme.

Now type in the address of your website and you will now see the new theme installed for the site.That’s it you have successfully installed a wordpress theme for your website. You can now start blogging.

How To Make A Blog - Install Wordpress Blog - How To Create A Wordpress Blog

This tutorial shows how to create a wordpress blog.

Let’s start the current tutorial:

Wordpress is my preferred platform for blogging. And luckily hostmonster come with a free install of wordpress. In this article I am going to write about how to install wordpress on your website.

How To Make A Wordpress Blog

Log into hostmonster.
Enter your ‘Domain’ and ‘Password’.

Install Wordpress Blog

The next screen that follows is the Fantastico home.

On the Fantastico home page click ‘WordPress’.

On the WordPress Screen that follows click ‘New Installation’.

On the next screen we have to install wordpress on your site.
Select your website from the dropdown next to ‘Install on domain’. Please note that there will be two listings for your new website. Lets assume my main domain name is xyz.com. So I have two listings - bestandcheapwebhosting.xyz.com and bestandcheapwebhosting.com. The one that I have to select from drop down is bestandcheapwebhosting.com.
Install in directory: For my website bestaandcheapwebhosting.com I am going to leave this blank. Lets say you have a website which sells coffee cups and the website address for this site is www.abc.com. Now you want to install a blog for that site. So you have to enter ‘blog’ in ‘Install in directory’. You are doing this because the main site www.abc.com will continue selling coffee cups and the site address www.abc.com/blog will have your blog. If you don’t enter blog in ‘Install in directory’ then your blog will be in www.abc.com and the coffee cups site will disappear.
Enter username and password in the ‘Admin access data’ fields. Note this down and you will use this to access the admin area.
Go further down and enter a password in ‘E-mail account configuration’.
Click ‘Install Wordpress’

On the screen that follows I always enter my email address and click ‘Send E-mail’. I print out my email and store for my records. You don’t have to do this but I recommend you do it.

How To Transfer A Domain Name To Web Host ?

Let’s start the current tutorial:

We have registered our domain name with GoDaddy and now we have to transfer the domain name to Hostmonster, so that this hosting provider can host the website. Here are the steps involved in the transfer process.

How To Transfer A Domain Name To Web Host (from GoDaddy to Hostmonster)

Go To GoDaddy.
Enter the User Name and Password.

Click ‘My Account’.

On the screen that follows click ‘Manage Domains’.

This is followed by a screen which lists all the domain names that are registered with GoDaddy. Click the domain you are interested in.

On the screen that follows click ‘Name Servers’.

On the screen that follows change Nameserver 1 and Nameserver 2 to hostmonsters addresses. Hostmonster’s addresses are - NS1.HOSTMONSTER.COM and NS2.HOSTMONSTER.COM.

So if you have done all of the above steps correctly GoDaddy starts processing your transfer. Please note that this domain transfer takes a few minutes. So get yourself a cup of coffee before logging onto hostmonster to receive the new domain.

Receive The Transferred Domain Name - At Hostmonster

Go to Hostmonster
Log into your hostmonster account
If you don’t already have an account then click ‘Sign Up Now’.

On the screen that follows click ‘Click here’. This will take you to the control panel.

On the control panel click ‘Addon Domains’.

Enter the details on Addon Domain page. Enter your new domain name in the ‘New Domain Name’ field (all in small letters).
The subdomain and document root details will be automatically entered.
Enter a password and make a note of the password.
Click Add Domain

Thats it done…The domain name is still registered with GoDaddy but the hosting company for the site is Hostmonster. You have successfully transferred your domain name to a different web host.

My preferred company for all my .com domain name registration is GoDaddy
. The two main reasons for my choice are:

Check Available Domain Names

The next step is to begin your domain name search. We might not always get the domain name of our choice. Our first choice domain names might already be taken. This is where compromise comes in. Keep checking various combinations of domain names until you find the one you are happy with. For example: My first choice for this site was the domain name ‘webhosting.com’. This domain name was not available. I tried various combinations of the original domain name and finally registered the domain name - ‘BestAndCheapWebHosting.com’.

Once you are on GoDaddy website, enter your domain name of choice (next to the box with the words ‘Start a domain search’) and click ‘GO’.
If your first choice for a domain name is not available, don’t get disheartened - keep trying various combinations and settle on the one that meets your criteria.

Available Domain Names

When you finally find an available domain name the screen says ‘domain name is available’. This to me is the happy screen. I prefer domain names ending with .com. I don’t mind even if I don’t get my first choice, I prefer to make a few compromises and go for .com rather than .org or other domain endings.

Wrap Up The Internet Domain Name Registration

In this section we finish the registration process (ie we are basically buying the domain name)

If you already have an account with GoDaddy then select ‘Login to an existing account’. This is the option I am selecting because I already have an account with GoDaddy. If you select this option then enter your ‘Login Name’ and ‘Password’ and click ‘Secure Login’.
If you don’t have an account with GoDaddy then select ‘I would like to create a new GoDaddy account’. If you select this option you have to then enter all your name and address details under ‘Create your domain registration information’.

On the screen that follows select 1 year as your registration length. If you however prefer to register the domain name for a longer period please go ahead and select a different registration length. GoDaddy allows you to select registration length up to 10 years.
For the Plan Features I usually select Deluxe. I like the extra security this option gives me. You can also select Protected if you prefer more security. The features of each of these options will be clearly explained on the screen.
Under Select Checkout Preference, I don’t have anything to customize. So I normally just select ‘No thanks. I’m ready to checkout’.
Finally click ‘Continue’.

Purchase Domain Name

Click ‘Remove’ next to ‘Business Registration’
Click ‘Remove’ next to Private Registration Services’
Select your ‘Payment Method’. For this domain name I am paying using my paypal account.
Tick the check boxes next to point 3 (after reading the agreement terms ofcourse)
Click ‘Checkout Now’.

Thats it you have completed the domain registration. GoDaddy will give you the order confirmation report. Please print it and store it away for your records.
